Dilema: I lover Porters. I suck at reviews. Solution: Read Alan's post over at A Good Beer Blog where he starts his review of seven porters. I'm interested to see what his take on the Flying Dog will be since I have mixed feelings on their beers.

I found out what part of the $50m Heineken is spending for the launch of Heineken Light went to: launch schwag. Their PR agency was kind enough to send us one of the launch kits. The pictures below don't do it justice but what they did was take a fancy metal wine carrying case…
… and modified it to hold a Heineken Light, a branded bottle opener, and a business card CD with more info:
For what it's worth, the bottle opener is nice and heavy and has an adjustable, uh, whatever you call the part that lifts the cap up. A tang maybe?
So, after admiring their packaging I put the bottle in the fridge and waited until the next day to try it. The verdict: I was happily surprised. I normally don't like Heineken which to me it is a little too bitter. The Light version has most of the body of a lager but much less of the bitterness. It weighs in at 99 calories, 6.8 grams of carbs, 1 gram of protein, and no fat.
Hopefully my taste buds weren't influence by the bottle opener (did I mention it is very nice?). I did an informal survey at a bar the other night and everyone I talked to that had tried it had liked it. Give it a try and let us know what you think in the comments.

I'm at Snowbird in Utah so I have a chance to sample some of the local brews. The first one to hit my lips was the Wasatch Polygamy Porter from Wasatch Brew Pub in Park City.
The bottle states “Why Have Just One” and I agree. In fact, I had a couple just to make sure. As far as porters go it is pretty light but still has a nice flavor. For those of you that are curious, here's what a bottle of this looks like when precariously perched on a table near the tram at Snowbird.
Next up was the Evolution Amber Ale.

Yet another good brew that holds true to the amber ale color and flavor. I'd also recommend having a couple of these, especially on tap. Sadly, I didn't bring my camera to the bar so I don't have a crappy live shot of this in a pint glass.

I’m guessing something gets lost in the translation on this:

Is it Champagne? Is it beer? No, it is: Natural water of Japan Quality malt of Champagne Barley Fine aroma hop of Saaz.
Anywhoo, jump on over to yongfook.com and see his review of what he calls the Goddess of Beers. A teaser:
So as much as it PAINS ME to say it - because it confirms that I cannot resist the awesome power of blatant advertising tricks - this beer tastes…a little like champagne. Sure, it’s not exactly 500ml of Veuve Clicquot in a can, but there is definitely an ever so slightly sweet, white wine-like aftertaste. I say “definitely” but is there actually? Or can I taste champagne simply because my primitive brain automatically sees “champagne” on the can and sends a message to my tongue saying “yeeep yep yep that’s champagne, just relax I’ve done your work for you”.

To make up for my bad Canadian joke the other day, I'm featuring a guest review from Kim,
a Toronton (Torontonian? Damn, this writing stuff is hard!) . Why, you
ask? Well, because she was kind enough to send me an email telling me
how Hail the Ale! was the best damn beer blog ever! (I'm paraphrasing a
bit here). Also, because I am lazy. And finally, because Kim and the
rest of the crew at Tucows I've talked to are all very good people.
So, go check out Kim's review of beers from the C'est What festival.
Yes, I realize the post is a little dated but so what? The beers are
still the same and her thoughts at the time were fresh as the hops on a
spring day in Belgium (or whenever hops are fresh in Belgium).
