Beer Advocate Launching Magazine

I'll admit that I don't frequent Beer Advocate as much as I should. They have great articles and are one of the best sources for ratings and reviews of beers. Now they are launching the Beer Advocate Magazine. From the press release:

With a style similar to magazines dedicated to aficionados of wine, food, and cigars, BeerAdvocate Magazine, will be both a classy and loud voice for beer and the lifestyle that's surrounds it. The monthly aims to introduce its better beer advocacy to those beer drinkers who've yet to experience what craft beer has to offer.

“It's high time we wake people up, get them thinking about beer in new ways, and give beer its due respect!” proclaimed BeerAdvocate.com co-founders, and brothers, Jason and Todd Alström.

The magazine is expected to debut in late fall 2006. “We're currently in negotiations with major publishers to provide a partnership through distribution, both internationally and for retail outlets. We've also begun building our editorial team, receiving loads of interest from writers, designers and photographers throughout the world. The talent and passion that these people bring to the magazine is simply awesome, and refreshing,” added Todd Alström.

Until July 1, 2006, beer lovers can become “Founding Subscribers” which entitles them to the Fall 2006 Inaugural Issue, an Official BeerAdvocate 2007 Calendar, a 12-month subscription starting in 2007, and a locked annual subscription rate of $19.95 per year, for life. Founding Subscribers are already in the thousands.

Green Parties: Organic Beer, Drunken Moose, and Corn Cups

DrunkenmooseJust in time for Earth Day, AOL has a feature up about “green parties”. They note the increasing popularity of organic beer and include a handy link to The Green Guide where you can find organic beer in your area. For the story of the drunken moose, you'll just have to read the article.

UNLV Beer and Wine Trip

Why didn't they have things like this when I was in college:

Join brew master, wine maker and UNLV Hotel College Food and Beverage instructor Jon Griffin on a guided tour of the region over an extended August weekend.

In the morning we'll enjoy a full buffet breakfast before departing for visits to two wineries for tours and tastings and stop for lunch at a microbrewery that will include samples of six microbrews.

After freshening up at the hotel, it's off to Moxee Hop Festival – Central Washington's annual celebration held prior to the harvest of towering vines of these pungent blossoms that flavor beers of America and the world. Arts and crafts vendors are part of the experience. However, as the impending hop harvest is a dawn-to-dusk, month-long marathon of hard, dusty work, the order of the evening for locals and visitors alike is always rock and roll, fun, food and of course, beer!

From the description I wasn't sure if this was open to the public or just UNLV students so I asked to Dick Benoit who sent me the link and he said:

It is an Educational Outreach (continuing education) trip open to the public. As a point of interest, though, Jon Griffin, the trip leader, teaches credit beer and wine classes in the Food & Beverage Department of UNLV's William F. Harrah College of Hotel Management.

This is a great idea for a trip and it is cool to see that they have beer and wine classes that you can get credit for instead of the extracurricular beer and wine “classes” I took in college.

Magic Hat Brewery Hiring

Burlington's second most famous business resident*, Magic Hat Brewing, is hiring as well as looking for an intern.

* – I have no idea if this is true, but seems like it would be.

Contract Brewing

Jay at Hedonist Beer Jive has an article up about contract brewing. Check it out and be in awe of his super-sleuthing skills in tracking down the brewer of a restaurant-branded beer.

It got me to thinking about what beers were contract brewed and what brewers were doing the brewing. In my exhaustive five minutes of googling, I came across a couple good articles about contract brewing: Contract-Brewing at beveragebusiness.com and Contract Brewing, the Pugsley / Shipyard Way at Beer Advocate. Pennsylvania even has contract brewing requirements.
